As your children grow there are ‘those things’, you know the ones, the little things that are unique about your children.  The ones you know you’ll always remember.  An expression, a look, a feature.  That thing you know they’ll grow out of but you wish you could bottle up and keep forever.  As a mother I know these things well and as a photographer I love to capture them.  For each of my own children I’ve worked hard to capture those things that made them unique in my images but I’ve found with each one, there always seems to be that one thing that I’m focused on.  For my daughter, it’s her hair.  She was almost completely balled as a newborn.  In fact, she didn’t really get much hair at all until she was about 1 year old.  By two however, she had a head full of curls.  It may seem silly, but when I look at that head full of curls I see everything that is perfect in her.  Her chubby little cheeks, her silly expressions and even her jokes.  It’s as if each one of those curls contains her childhood, tightly wrapped, neatly on her head.   Perhaps it’s because she’s my last little one, but now more than ever I’m obsessed with her beautiful curls.  I hope she keeps them past childhood, but if she doesn’t, I know I will.  They will be wound around my heart the way she is forever.

When I capture an image like this of my own child, I can’t even describe the joy it brings me.  That simple little image that holds a memory so dear.  It’s this, in it’s very essence, that I hope to give to you.  A chance to hold in your hands forever, that memory that you will never forget.  For each memory can flood your brain and fill your heart with emotion you thought you’d only experience in that moment.  This can be both a blessing and a curse, but I choose to count my blessings.  And children are those blessings.  They grow so fast, with days that last a lifetime and years that go by in a flash.  When I can capture a little piece of that short time, for me, it’s truly priceless.

There is something so wonderful, so simple and innocent about a child.  I see it in my own children daily, but I adore studying those traits in others.  This beautiful little girl arrived in a very different state than you’ll see below.  She was nervous, shy and a little sad.  Her Grandmother was kind enough to arrange her photo session and was there by her side the entire time but children are wise beyond their years and are often wary of new people and surroundings.  We spent the first half hour walking around, looking at the pond and even playing on the swings before we took one picture.  As shy as she was at the start she brought forth in spades with her smiles and laughter at the end as she raced around the property.

Children laugh, play and dance free from inhibition and little Miss C was no exception.  She laughed and twirled around in her beautiful dress.  Those big round cheeks and gorgeous bright eyes, I found myself laughing the whole time too.  I didn’t have the opportunity to meet this little one as a baby but I can imagine what a sweet little newborn she was!  They grow and change so fast at these young ages, I love being able to capture those little bits of personality so her parents, grandparents, even her own children will be able to hold these memories in their hands.  It truly makes it all worth it!  This session was extra special, in fact I’m only sharing images from the second half because the first half is a surprise gift.  🙂  I love that!  How wonderful!

After all of that racing around there was a break for treats.  🙂  Sweets for a sweet little girl.  What a fun way to spend an afternoon!

This month’s blog circle theme is Family.  I struggled with this one a little bit.  Not because I didn’t have anything to photograph, actually quite the opposite.  There are so many things to capture when I think of family.  The thing is, my family, those that are the most dear to me, don’t fit into a pretty little mold.  The beautiful outdoor posed pictures, that’s just not us.  I’m not talking about extended family, although that’s not perfect either, I’m talking about the  little ones that I’m struggling to raise daily.  We moved to the Louisville, Kentucky area right before our children were born so from the time they were newborn babies we were on our own.  We have amazing families who would do anything to help us, they just live anywhere from 500 to 2,000 miles away.  As a result, we have to figure it all out on our own.  There are no last minute babysitters to call, or Mom’s to help with sick little ones, or just a stressed out me; it’s just us and all of our crazy!

You know what?  It’s great.  I love every second of our “crazy” little world.  So to capture family this month, I thought I’d bring you a little bit of that out of the mold world that I live in.  This is my family, at least the little ones in it.

This is us. Just us.  No posing, no planning, just us, in all of our silly glory celebrating the little things in life like bath time, or shower time in this case.  🙂

Next up is Stephanie from Lemonade Stand Photography, a truly amazing artist.  Head on over and see her take on the Family theme and while you’re there take the time to check out her work and tell her what you think!

  • I love candid photos

This is such an amazing family, I almost have no words to describe them… almost!  😉  I first met these guys about a year ago when their youngest daughter was born.  I’ll never forget taking her newborn pictures.  She was a little older than most of the newborns I usually photograph but she was absolutely perfect.  I love photographing babies, but it’s even more fun when they come back to see me again and I get to see how they’ve grown.  No matter how sweet I envisioned her and her older sister at this age, believe it or not, they were even cuter!  They arrived in the sweetest little dresses.  In fact the whole family was styled perfectly.  I can’t take any credit either, it was all Mom on this one!  You can really tell by the way a family interacts together how much fun they have together.  You can direct all you want, but real natural smiles don’t come with direction!  They come with fun.  🙂  Lucky that’s exactly what we had, fun!

I loved everything about this session, from the smiles to the silly fun.  Loved it!  There are a couple of sneak peek pictures that I didn’t post a second time but you can find them here.   Here’s the best part, this isn’t even all of the fun images from this session!  That’s right, I’ve got more!  😉  But you’ll have to wait, they will be in a separate post.  Patience my friends, patience. 🙂
